But if you own an unsecured network, you should be aware that the world is not composed entirely of honest souls - and it is difficult for the dishonest to see exactly what you do on your network. Q. What is WEP and WPA, and which should I use?
A. The first line of defense for your Wi-Fi encryption, which encrypts data transmitted between your computer and your wireless router. Unfortunately, most routers come with encryption disabled, and many users do not turn it on, letting completely exposed. If you have not already, enable encryption on your router, and use the strongest form supported by your network. The Wireless Protected Access (WPA) and WPA2 have supplanted the more recent old and less secure Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP).
Go with WPA or WPA2, if possible, since WEP is relatively easy to break. (You must use the same formula for all network devices, you can not mix WEP and WPA.) Keys used for WPA and WPA2 change dynamically, making them almost impossible to crack. Use a strong password encryption key, such as letters and numbers, 14 characters or more.
If you have an older router that supports WEP only, you will be safer if you use 128-bit WEP keys - But also consult the manufacturer's website for firmware update that adds support WPA. If it seems that the update is likely that the exchange of old cards and routers to newer models that support WPA. Search for a router that supports the hybrid WPA + WPA2, where you can use the stronger WPA2 encryption with adapters that support it, but still maintaining compatibility with WPA adapters.
Be sure to change the network name and password in the default router. This will make it much harder for hackers to break into your router and command your settings.
